the brief

turn a courtyard into a game

for its summer of expression campaign, the box plymouth wanted to take its exhibitions outside and give a corridor of a courtyard a purpose of its own.

the first proposal was a blank canvas: a single floor decal on the existing tile grid, like an oversized board game with no winning move.

research

how people move through it

the design began with human centred, social study of the courtyard: the desired paths people take, and the zones where they linger. the trails follow them.

A plan of the courtyard tile grid with the decal trails laid over it, beside large pale grey curves and circles marking desired paths and the zones where people linger

the idea

the paintings become the playground

the concept stayed and the idea evolved: decals cut from paintings in the box’s collection, strung into trails across the paving that spell play, draw, move and explore.

the result

a floor game for all ages

the paintings left the galleries and now run across the courtyard as a play-your-way floor game for all ages.
