A page from the Youth Theatre Census Summary Report 2024 with the statement youth theatre is big in large type on red, a quote and a photo of young performers on stage

A report gets read when each chapter says one clear thing, the numbers lead, real voices sit beside them, and the design makes it easy to share a single finding. Length is not the enemy. Confusion is.

We designed the identity and census summary report for Youth Theatre Together, the biggest survey of youth theatres since 2011. Here is what worked.

give each chapter one statement

Every chapter of the report opens with a plain statement in big type, in its own colour: youth theatre is big, is underfunded, is not accessible enough. A reader can skim the statements and understand the whole argument.

let the numbers lead

People come for the data, so show it first and explain it after. Large figures, simple charts and short labels do more than paragraphs.

keep real voices beside the statistics

A side column of quotes from youth theatre leaders kept human stories next to every statistic. The data tells you what is happening, and the voices tell you why it matters.

make it a system, not a document

Because the report used a clear visual system, colour, type and shapes, it could be cut into other pieces. Fifteen social cards carried a bold finding, a stat or a quote, each with one link back to the report.

design for the people reading it

Many youth theatres are small and run by volunteers, so nothing could feel corporate. Plain language, strong contrast and a friendly look kept it welcoming and readable.

“Ace is a thoughtful, talented and diligent collaborator. He created a coherent and vibrant identity for our campaign and report. We loved working with him.”
